I had an opportunity to speak at the Men's Mental Health Summit in Denver, Colorado and my topic was on the "The Mask Men Wear" I shared with a group of men that most men aren’t emotionally absent because they don’t care. They’re absent because they learned early which version of themselves was acceptable—and they’ve been wearing it ever since.

The real crisis facing men today isn’t motivation, confidence, or discipline.
It’s identity confusion.

The Protector

You learned that love is conditional. So you keep it light. Positive. Entertaining. People enjoy you. But they don’t see your pain—because you won’t let them.

The Peacemaker

You learned that conflict costs connection. So you disappear to keep the peace. People assume you’re fine. You feel invisible.

The Perfectionist

You learned that mistakes equal rejection. So you overthink, delay, and critique. People see excellence. You feel like you’re never enough.

Here’s the part most men miss:

The mask worked.
At one point in your life, it protected you.
But now it’s costing you—your marriage, your clarity, your emotional health, your leadership.

And you can’t outgrow what you won’t confront.

So the real question isn’t which mask exists.

Which mask are you still wearing because you believe that’s what the room requires of you?
